History

The Black Hawk helicopter, officially known as the Sikorsky UH-60, was developed by Sikorsky Aircraft for the United States Army. First flown in 1974 and introduced into service in 1979, it was designed to replace the ageing UH-1 Huey used during the Vietnam War. The Black Hawk offered improved speed, range, and survivability. It quickly became a vital part of American military operations and has been adapted for various roles, including troop transport, medical evacuation, and combat missions. Over time, it has been exported to several allied nations. The helicopter gained significant public attention during the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, depicted in the book and film Black Hawk Down. Today, it remains a cornerstone of military aviation worldwide.
