History.

The Kawasaki Ki-61-I Hien was a distinctive Japanese Army fighter of the Second World War. Designed by Takeo Doi, it first flew in December 1941 and entered service in 1943. Unusually for a Japanese aircraft, it was powered by a licence-built Daimler-Benz DB 601 inline engine, giving it a slim profile and high speed. Allied pilots initially mistook it for German or Italian types. The Ki-61-I saw extensive combat over New Guinea, China, and the defence of Japan, excelling at interception and ground attack. Although robust and well armed, engine reliability and maintenance difficulties limited effectiveness, prompting later development into the Ki-100. It remains remembered for combining European technology with Japanese doctrine under wartime pressures and demanding operational conditions.
